What to Look for in an MP5 Clone

Must read

There are many MP5 clones out there. Some are better than others. Some are cheaper than others. But if what you really want is what made the HK MP5 popular in the first place (with a few improvements) here are some things you should look for before you buy.

Faithful Form Factor

Obviously, you want it to look as much like the original HK MP5 as possible, right? If it’s an MP5 clone you’re looking for, and don’t want to shell out the thousands for a real HK, then you might as well get a clone that looks the part.

9mm Chambering

Many MP5 clones are chambered in .22, and granted, there are some advantages to this. The .22 is a low-recoil, low-cost, widely available cartridge that does have a lot of sporting applications. But the real MP5 is a 9mm – so any true MP5 clone might as well be too. Otherwise it’s more of a lookalike and less of a clone.

A Roller-Delayed Blowback Action

If the action isn’t a roller-delayed blowback action, it’s not only not an MP5, it’s not even an MP5 clone. Some lookalikes are made with direct blowback, like the YKMP5. They look like MP5s, but they lack the heart and soul of the platform, which is definitively, and beyond doubt, smooth-shooting, low-recoil roller-delayed blowback operation.

More Ergonomic Fire Controls

One area in which the original MP5 could potentially stand to improve is with the fire selector. Some platforms based on the MP5, like the Zenith Firearms ZF-5, feature more ergonomic fire controls that are easier to access and engage.

A Smooth Feed Ramp

This is one area in which the design of the original HK MP5 can actually be improved. It has a stepped feed ramp; some clones are made with smooth feed ramps that are more reliable when fed hollow points and other similar loads.

American-Made Construction

Foreign-made firearms and parts are subject to draconian restrictions, per the ATF. If you buy American-made clones or parts, you won’t have to pay any mind to that.

Compatibility with Other MP5 Parts and Accessories

Some MP5 clones are made for compatibility with MP5 parts and accessories, others may have a more proprietary design. If what you’re looking for is chiefly authenticity, then get one that offers this sort of compatibility.

An Optics Rail

This is another area in which the original design could potentially be improved. If you want to expand your MP5 or clone with optics like a red dot sight or even a scope, then make sure to get a clone that has a rail over the receiver – they are out there.

Enter the ZF-5

If you want an MP5 clone that satisfies all of these requirements, consider a Zenith Firearms ZF-5.

These roller-delayed platforms are chambered in 9mm, feature smooth feed ramps and better fire controls, optics rails over the receivers, and are American-made. Another big selling point of the ZF-5 platform is how faithfully it captures the form factor and function of the real HK MP5.

But on top of that is the price. While they aren’t cheap, they are considerably more affordable than real HK MP5 subguns, not to mention a lot more accessible, since they are made in America.

There are few other platforms that can hold a candle to the ZF-5, and reviewers have broadly lauded it. For more information on the specifications of the gun, visit Zenith Firearms or get in touch with their customer service team directly and they will help you out.
