3 Surprisingly Eco-Friendly Materials Used to Make Customized Badges

Must read

Interested in investing in customized badges for your employees, but looking to do it using materials that leave less of a mark on the environment, which are either biodegradable or can be recycled?

Let’s take a look at some surprisingly ecologically-friendly materials that can be used to produce name badges (and which Imprint Plus at imprintplus.com actually uses!)

HDPE
With a synthetic-sounding name like high-density polyethylene (better known as HDPE) you’d think it has to be terrible for the environment, but it’s not.

HDPE, the material commonly used to make milk jugs, bottles, and other consumer goods, is lightweight, strong, moisture and chemical-resistant, and often used in the food service industry because it is safe to use around food.

In addition to being highly durable, it is affordable and easy to produce, and most importantly, it can be recycled. Even if it is thrown away, it won’t release toxic chemicals into the environment as it breaks down.

Bamboo
Hardly any explanation is warranted here. Bamboo, a fast-growing grass that grows in many areas of the world, is strong, lightweight, and miraculously cheap.

Some cultivars can grow as quickly as two feet per day, which drives down the price of production. And while bamboo requires a decent amount of water, it is a natural, sustainable resource.

Bamboo is also a carbon sink that helps absorb massive quantities of carbon from the atmosphere (helping to combat climate change), all while providing a highly practical natural material that can be used in construction, consumer goods, and of course, name tags.

Aluminum
Most “best-of” lists focusing on sustainable or ecologically friendly materials totally forget to cover the use of most metals.

And, granted, there are some heavy metals that are both labor-intensive to produce as well as potentially damaging when re-released into the environment. But this is not true for all metals.

Case in point, aluminum. Aluminum is one of the most eco-friendly metals out there, and it has a wide range of uses. Extremely strong, lightweight, and chemical-resistant, aluminum can be used in everything from the production of jet fuselages to tableware (and of course, name badges!)

Most importantly, aluminum is 100% recyclable and can be recycled indefinitely with effectively no loss of inherent value. It is estimated that as much as three-quarters of the aluminum ever produced in the world is still in circulation.

Plus, it’s affordable and long-lasting – so what’s not to love?
