The Brass Goat Casing Catcher for AR 15 Rifles: Answering Some Common Questions

Must read

We’ve all had some trouble or other with those mesh bag casing catchers for AR 15 rifle platforms. You know, the ones with “heat-resistant” mesh and wire frames that tend to snag and melt and cause jams.

Yes, those.

Well, the people at Magwell Mounts got it into their heads to solve some of these problems, and they did quite a good job of it with the Brass Catcher, which not only captures spent casings and keeps shooting areas clear (as it should) but cures some of the headaches caused by those “other” brass traps.

1. How do I know if it will fit my rifle?
The Brass Goat is designed to fit AR-15 mil-spec lower magwells. If you have an AR-15 with a forged, mil-spec lower, the Brass Goat will fit the magwell.

2. Do I need to mod the rifle?
Although the Brass Goat is only compatible with specific rifles, it requires the operator to make no mods. It is easy to attach as well (see below).

3. Do I need tools to mount it?
The Brass Goat quickly attaches to the lower receiver magwell and requires no tools either to attach or detach. It also requires no adjustments to be made after mounting and will cover the ejection port as intended.

4. Does it obstruct the sight picture?
The Brass Goat does not have Picatinny rail mounts and so does not mount to Pic rails or to any rail surface. This helps keep the profile slim and low and does not obstruct the sight picture.

5. How many rounds does it hold?
The Brass Goat itself is only a deflector of ejected brass. It does not contain any, but it is compatible with a special hopper that can hold up to 30 rounds of .223 spent brass.

6. With which cartridges is the Brass Goat compatible?
The Brass Goat is, of course, compatible with .223 Rem and 5.56 NATO cartridges, however, it is also compatible with a wide range of other cartridges including .204 Ruger, .22 Nosler, .300 Blackout, and 7.62x39mm. There is also a version compatible with the S&W M&P 22 and .22 LR cartridges. For a full list, see Brass Goat compatibility.

7. How do I empty it?
The Brass Goat is compatible with a detachable hopper that can be easily removed without having to take the Brass Goat off the rifle.

8. How can I keep it clean?
The Brass Goat, unlike mesh bags with hook and loop webbing, is easy to keep clean. Simply take it off the rifle and clean it down with warm water to remove dirt, oil, fouling, or other residues.

9. Other mesh bag shell catchers melt. Will the Brass Goat melt or burn?
The Brass Goat is made from hard, solid molded ABS resin and will neither melt nor burn. It is also resistant to water, oil, the elements, and a wide range of other factors.

10. How does the Brass Goat prevent jams?
Because of the orientation of the Brass Goat over the ejection port and the nature of its solid construction, the Brass Goat effectively deflects and captures brass, preventing hot brass from scattering around a shooting area. It also will not jam when mounted properly and used with compatible cartridges.
